River of Light comments from the public

"Last night was an absolutely incredible performance. The visual beauty was breathtaking. The experience was profound. The feelings expressed by the people lining the bridges and riverbanks were those of awe and appreciation. Congratulations to all who worked to make this happen. It was worth every ounce of energy. Thank you!"
- Linda

"I was present at the River of Light Saturday night and I must congratulate you on a very successful installation/showing. There were a few of us on our bikes and we followed the spheres on their journey down the Bow. The impression I received from the thousands of Calgarians who were perched on the river banks or crowded on one of the bridges was pure amazement and awe. It was very inspiring to see that many people enjoying art in Calgary."
- Shea

"What a great idea, never heard of such a thing before."

We had a truly fantastic team of Kayakers on the river guiding the 500 illuminated spheres from Edworthy Park to Prince's Island Lagoon. A big Creatmosphere thank you to you all.

Yes it was an awesome experience! I gave a balloon away to a couple of little children and asked them to make a wish and to believe it would come true. Thank you for providing me with such an awesome experience!!!!!

Thanks to you and the Creatmosphere folks for putting on such a neat event.  It was definitely the neatest thing I've done in a kayak, and I'll be telling people about it for quite some time to come!

Work in Progress

28 light spheres, 500 meters of rope, 1,5km of cable, 3 video projectors, 3 screens, 43 lights, 1 computer controller, 5 dives in the lagoon and 20km of walking later we now have the Light Matrix on at Prince's Island and Edworthy Park and Montgomery View Bridge lit up.

Technical & Production Manager David Abra, 4 fantastic local production volunteers, and 6 local technicians and myself have laid out this kit over the past 7 days. Its been exhausting, challenging, and with such bizarre installs in the public space always a great laugh!

Everything is working - the wireless control communicating the live data to the matrix spheres is running really smoothly thanks to the vvvv program written and developed by our programmer Hayden Anyasi. We have a fantastic synchronization happening as both the light and video signals project across the lagoon and the projection screens.

Today is the install of the daylight spheres, more work on the river...

The Matrix at the Lagoon

On site on Princes Island and Edworthy park

Today is Thursday and we've been hit by really bad weather! It has slowed down production but we have managed to power up Edworthy Park and Montgomery View Bridge with the lights in place, so we're ready to go.

Down at the Matrix, the thunderstorm was so strong that the spheres moved 400m in the lagoon, which unfortunately played havoc with the perfect grid we'd set up the day before. David Abra will be diving again tonight, we've got to test controls and signals and get those  spheres switched on.

We have now an ADSL line up and running so we've managed tweaks between Calgary and our London Programmer Hayden Anyasi for adjustments in colours, patterns, and speed in order to work with the scale of the spheres on the water. It's always incredible when you finally see the vision installed. It's been a year of research in the making and to finally be able to tweak in situ is such a fantastic reward. Thanks to Hayden for our vvvv patch that is now at version 15.

A huge thank you must go to our local team of volunteers -  Barb Maier, Troy Deer and Melyssa Nielsen for their fantastic support  on site, truely incrediable team spirit, we couldn't be doing this without you.

Melyssa Nielsen is also documenting the install, check out the pictures on Flickr.

Finally I've also been interviewed by GLOBAL TV and CBC

Production - The Light Matrix

We began production of the Light Matrix today which consists of 28 spheres measuring 1.2m in diameters on the water at Prince's Island Lagoon. Using colour and patterns then spheres interprete data gathered about the flow, quality, demand and cycle of the Bow River.

Here's the first one being inflated - 1 down, 27 to go!
